ESCHER, The Dutch Genius in Porto

FEBRUARY 28 – JULY 28, 2019

The work of M. C. ESCHER – seen by around 3 million people in exhibitions in New York, Rome, Bologna, Lisbon and Naples, among other cities – now comes to Porto, the “Undefeated City”.

Starting on February 28, a large retrospective exhibition of the Dutch artist M. C. Escher, featuring about 150 works, will be on display at the Centro de Congressos da Alfândega do Porto.

A good deal of Escher’s merit lies in the broadening of the imagination of those who contemplate his work. Science, nature, precision, geometry, analytical and contemplative skills merge to give way to a visionary perspective, with multiple readings and interpretations, in a work whose theme is permanently related to the concept of impossible.

The exhibition displays 135 works, including the iconic masterpieces “Hand with Reflecting Sphere” (1935), “Eye” (1946), “Three Worlds” and “Rind” (1955) and “Bond of Union” (1956).

After the success of the first stage of the exhibition in Lisbon, visited by 200 thousand people, the organization – Arthemisia, a world leader in the organization of exhibitions, and the Escher Foundation – decided to bring the exhibition to the city of Porto.

Curated by Mark Valdhuisen, director of the M. C. Escher Company, and Federico Guidiceandrea, a major expert on the artist’s work, the exhibition highlights the creative journey of the great visionary genius, whose work has inspired the mind of scientists and the fantasy of graphic artists and exerted a huge influence on the Art world.
